Sultas story
Indy and Neil trained at the Honda Institute in London from 1997 to 2002, completing their apprenticeships before becoming fully qualified technicians at Robert Bowett Honda, where they worked for two years.
Both then moved on to JCT600 Volkswagen, working together for another two years until Indy returned to Hepworth Honda in Huddersfield, while Neil joined Lightcliffe Škoda.
Although their careers took them in different directions, they stayed in touch, even during the four years they didn’t work together.
After working separately for a few years, Indy and Neil began taking on out-of-hours repairs and servicing for friends and family. One evening, Indy called Neil to ask if he could service a car at his house on the way home from work. Coincidentally, Neil was already working on a friend’s car, so they decided to tackle them together and get both jobs done faster.
While working, a passerby stopped and asked if they did this regularly—and if they could repair his car too. That moment marked the birth of Sultas Auto Specialists. Word of mouth spread quickly, and what started as weekend work soon became a full-time demand. Saturdays weren’t enough, so they began working evenings as well.
Then, life threw them a curveball—both of their partners fell pregnant at the same time. With growing families on the way, the long hours took their toll. Both partners made it clear: “We hardly ever see you at home! Either take the leap and work for yourselves or stop working evenings and weekends!” That was the wake-up call they needed.
A year after their children were born, Indy and Neil handed in their notices and took the leap to go it alone. As demand continued to grow, they secured a workshop in Leeds, chosen for its central location between them. From that point on, Sultas Auto Specialists truly began to take shape.
With brand-new ramps, a fully equipped MOT testing station, and a newly launched website, Sultas was officially up and running. Demand continued to grow, and before long, working until 10 PM every night was no longer sustainable. To keep up with the increasing number of customer vehicles, Indy and Neil began recruiting full-time, qualified technicians, expanding the business into what it is today.
Then, on Boxing Day 2015, disaster struck. Severe flooding devastated the workshop, leaving the business completely washed out. It was a significant setback, but the response from customers was overwhelming. Many stepped in to offer help, determined to see Sultas back on its feet. A huge amount of hard work, determination, and community support went into rebuilding, and closing down was never an option.
For that, Sultas extends a heartfelt thank you to all the customers, friends, and family who stood by them during that time. Their support played a vital role in helping the business recover, and it remains deeply appreciated.
Five years later, as the business continued to grow, an unexpected twist occurred—both Indy and Neil’s partners fell pregnant again at the same time. Just like before, their children would grow up together, proving that some things really do come full circle!
